In the Natural World

Heading Outside
The act of drawing forces one to slow down and pay attention. Closely studying a subject, from the simplest mushroom, to an intricate insect is a real meditation. I use a simple, straightforward technique and fast-drying media like watercolor, gouache, and water-soluble colored pencils. Sometimes I can work on location with just the toolkit in my backpack but other times, depending on weather and the quick movements of my subject, I will take photos on my phone to study later.
As I continue this practice, I observe relationships between plants, animals and insects. Nothing is on its own - everything is interconnected in the ecosystem. The watercolor paintings and graphite drawings on this webpage represent some of the things that nature journaling has taught me.
