Nature Journaling
Heading Outside
The act of drawing forces one to slow down and pay attention. Closely studying a subject, from the simplest mushroom, to an intricate insect is a real meditation. I use a simple, straightforward technique and fast-drying media like watercolor, gouache, and water-soluble colored pencils. Sometimes I can work on location with just the toolkit in my backpack but other times, depending on weather and the quick movements of my subject, I will take photos on my phone to study later.
But as I continue my practice, I am confronted by all the battles going on in the natural world. Invasive insects, plants, the overpopulation of certain species and above all, the actions of humans, have completely changed the ecosystem. This gives me even more reason to keep looking and learning.
