LIVE ON FIVE
Posted on February 7, 2026
Every few years the Buffalo Arts Studio presents the LIVE on FIVE exhibition and auction.
This is a fun time for all the artists in town to donate four original 5”x 5" works for the cause and to showcase their style.
I love to observe, draw and paint bugs! When I saw the notice that the Burchfield Penney Art Center was planning an exhibit this summer of Charles Burchfield's Insects & Spiders, I thought I would combine both elements.
So here are my four watercolors with a hint of Burchfield patterns in the background. In the upper left corner is a Cicada and in the upper right is a Katydid. The lower left corner features a Cecropia Moth and in the lower right is a Dragonfly.
Insects are both a fun and important subject to me. During Covid, I began gardening with native plants. I read works such as, ''Bringing Nature Home” by entomologist, Dr. Doug Tallamy and “Braiding Sweetgrass,” by biologist, Robin Wall Kimmerer. To visit native plant nurseries and hear about the Homegrown National Park was to feel hope again. Even in these times of terrible environmental destruction, there are ordinary people doing all they can to bring awareness and care to the natural world. It has been a thrill for me to go out into my garden, my city and into the wild and see butterflies and all sorts of amazing creatures. Through my art practise, I hope to pass my enthusiasm onto my family and to the public.
