BAD AIR (Working Title)
Posted on March 29, 2026
I recently met activist and citizen scientist, Jackie James, who led the fight to shut down the Tonawanda Coke Corporation. TCC was basically a criminal enterprise, breaking every Clean Air law since 1970.
By 2001, people in the surrounding neighborhoods started comparing notes about their cancers and other deadly illnesses. It took 16 years of dedicated work by Jackie, the community, the DEA, EPA and others to finally have the company convicted in court.
Now Tonawanda can breathe again! Jackie has written a children's book to inspire and teach kids about citizen science. I am honored to work with her on this project....and I can visualize the dark skies in the beginning of the book and the blue skies over the Victory Garden at the end.
Stay tuned!
